Arizona artists paint Little Free Libraries to support early literacy

More than 25 Arizona artists are painting Little Free Libraries to bring early literacy to neighborhoods across the Valley this spring! The one-of-a-kind Little Free Libraries are available for auction by texting READ to 27000* or visiting swhd.org/artist, and will be on display at the Scottsdale Culinary Festival Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15.

The unique blend of talent, community and books is aimed to raise funds to support Southwest Human Development early literacy programs.

“We found some incredibly talented local artists who were open to supporting early literacy programs in our community and the results have blown us away,” said Jake Adams, chief development officer at Southwest Human Development. “The collaboration between Southwest Human Development, Little Free Library and our local artists to support this great cause is something that’s never been done before.”

Each masterpiece boasts it own artistic flare. From mystical horses, colorful butterflies, beach vibes to desert landscapes, there is a library fit for every neighborhood’s taste. As an Arizona landscape library perfectly camouflages in a classic desert neighborhood, a bright, colorful design may seamlessly integrate in Downtown Phoenix.

“It’s so awesome to see how the Little Free Libraries that get sent to artists all look the same, and every single one comes back to us with its own unique flavor,” said Adams. “The pieces are phenomenal, there’s truly a design for every community’s personality.”

A Little Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange. Little Free Libraries are unique, come in many shapes and sizes, and they all support early literacy in the community. Anyone in the community may take a book or bring a book to share with others in their neighborhood.

Community members who would like to bid on their very own library can text READ to 27000* or visit swhd.org/artist to view all of the designs and place a bid. Artist bios are displayed for those who would like to learn more about the artists and what inspired their designs. The minimum bid for each Little Free Library is $100.

The event will also feature a “People’s Choice Award.” Scottsdale Culinary Festival attendees will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite masterpiece by voting with their dollars. One dollar will equal one vote and the winning artist will receive a prize package.

Generously supported by The Scottsdale League for the Arts, a portion of the proceeds from this project will benefit early literacy programs provided by Southwest Human Development. Half of each Little Free Library bid up to $1,500 is tax deductible and any amount donated beyond the initial $1,500 bid is fully tax deductible.

If you’d like to purchase tickets to the Scottsdale Culinary Festival, visit scottsdalefest.org and use promo code SHDLOVE – the festival will automatically donate $5 to Southwest Human Development!
