Ariel’s Journey: Finding Joy and Independence at the Adapt Shop
Three-year-old Ariel has been a familiar face at Southwest Human Development’s Adapt Shop—visiting more than 13 times since she was just under a year old. When her mom, Angel, first brought her in, she was carrying Ariel in her arms. Now, thanks to custom equipment from the Adapt Shop, Ariel can sit upright, stand with support, and even play with toys that were once out of reach.
It all started when a therapist from Early Intervention told Angel about the Adapt Shop. What makes the shop so special, Angel says, is that they listen. “They ask what we need instead of telling us what we should do,” she shared.
From switch-adapted toys and loaner wheelchairs to a floor scooter and a chair made just for her post-hip surgery, Ariel has received the tools—and support—she needs to grow, move, and thrive. “Beth and the team always find a way. They’re the most hands-on, helpful people I’ve ever met.”
Today, Ariel is standing with help at a custom standing table and cruising around in a scooter adapted just for her. Angel now finds herself sharing the shop’s story with other families, passing on the hope and help they’ve received.
Because at the Adapt Shop—every child can play.
