Athena & Thalia
The Fajardo family has faced unique challenges and triumphs in their journey as parents of two beautiful daughters, Thalia and Athena. Their story is one of resilience, support, and the transformative impact of Southwest Human Development’s Smooth Way Home program and High-Risk Perinatal Program (HRPP).
The Fajardo’s were referred to the Smooth Way Home program after welcoming Thalia, who was born prematurely at just 30 weeks’ gestation. Following her birth, Thalia spent four weeks in the NICU, primarily due to difficulties gaining weight. During this trying time, the family sought guidance and assistance to ensure their daughter’s healthy development. They had already been enrolled in our High-Risk Perinatal Program, which provided them with crucial resources to navigate the complexities of premature birth.

In their journey, the Fajardo’s learned invaluable skills to support Thalia’s growth milestones. The Fragile Infant Specialist and HRPP nurse worked closely with the family, providing tailored resources and addressing the mother’s concerns. Through developmental screenings for both Thalia and her older sister, Athena—who was born at 35 weeks—the family gained insights into how to promote their daughters’ physical and neurological development.
Thalia, now nine months old, is thriving. Her mother shares, “She loves to be picked up, bounce in her jumper, and play with her sisters. She’s happy, smiles, and giggles—her joy is infectious.” The family is grateful for the support they received, which not only helped Thalia stay on track with her milestones but also equipped them with the tools to foster her growth at home.
Reflecting on their experience, the Fajardo’s are enthusiastic advocates for Southwest Human Development. “I would absolutely recommend it to other families,” her mother states. “They were there by our side during some of our most difficult times, helping us overcome hurdles. The best part was their laid-back approach and willingness to accommodate our needs, whether it was changing appointments or hopping on a call when I needed help.”
The Fajardo family’s journey highlights the importance of support and guidance in navigating the challenges of premature birth. With each milestone Thalia reaches, they feel a sense of relief and gratitude. The family looks forward to the future, focusing on their daughters’ growth and enjoying the everyday moments that bring them joy. Their experience reflects the value of community resources and the positive impact they can have on families.
