Two out of every three children living in poverty don’t have books of their own at home. That puts them, on average, three years behind children who do. Today, only 46% of Arizona third graders read at grade level – and that skill is a leading indicator of future high school graduation.

How can we address this literacy gap? Increasing access to books at home. Little Free Libraries are a way to do just that, creating a local, shared library available anytime in local neighborhoods. It’s one way the Valley Leadership Education Impact Team is working to ensure 72% of third-grade students are reading at or above grade level by 2030.

Through Valley Leadership’s partnership with Southwest Human Development, you can build, paint and decorate a permanent Little Free Library in Arizona. All supplies, directions and placement are provided. Your business provides the team and on-going commitment, with terms starting at two years, to help kids receive books and work toward solving one of Arizona’s most pressing education issues. This is a great activity for families or to build team camaraderie!

Impact Maker is an initiative of Valley Leadership that works to create immediate and long-term impact on Arizona’s most pressing issues. Learn more about Impact Maker at impactmakeraz.org. Questions? Email lfl@impactmakeraz.org.
