Champions of Books for Babies … and Toddlers, Too!

You can be a part of this exciting project by joining our Champions of Books for Babies … and Toddlers, Too! This is a group of people who care deeply about literacy and the importance of children being prepared to read when they enter school. They know that their donations will support literacy initiatives in all of the programs delivered at Southwest Human Development including Reach Out and Read and Raising A Reader.

Publisher’s Circle

$200/month $2,400 annually ($2,300 is tax deductible)
Impact: Substantially funds the cost of an eight-week Raising A Reader program session.
This eight-week program goes into low-income communities to promote family literacy. Parents and children learn how to use books to give children the early literacy skills they need to enter school ready and excited to learn. Every child takes home five books to begin their own home library!

Author’s Circle

$84/month $1000 annually ($900 is tax deductible)
Impact: Funds the purchase of books distributed through the Healthy Families Program for one month.
The Healthy Families program serves new or soon-to-be high-risk parents through home visits, significantly reducing child abuse and neglect. The use of children’s books is taught as a method for parents to interact with their child and encourage their infant’s healthy brain development.

Our team of pediatric specialists provides comprehensive evaluations, coordinated care, individualized treatment plans, and on-going services for children who may be delayed in achieving developmental milestones. The child’s interaction with a book is used, in part, as a diagnostic assessment tool, which begins in observing the child’s behavior in the Children’s Developmental Center’s waiting room.

When children are removed from their birth families, the state offers parents the resources to develop the parenting skills necessary to reunite the family. Some of those resources are offered through several of Southwest Human Development’s child welfare programs, including one-on-one parenting education and supervised visits. These programs use children’s books to model nurturing behaviors and engage the family.

    • 1st edition book of the year
    • Opportunity to purchase two (2) discounted tickets to Books for Babies … and Toddlers, Too! Luncheon
