The Developing Child -Preschoolers

This workshop explores the developmental milestones and theoretical principles that support preschool age children in their developmental journey. Participants will identify opportunities and classroom strategies to further a child’s development.

Puppet and Storyboard Fun: Bringing Literacy Alive Across the Curriculum

Participants will gain valuable insight into the use of puppets and storyboards in the early childhood classroom to support literacy development. This workshop will examine how to construct simple puppets and storyboards. Participants will develop strategies for engaging children’s literacy and communication skills using puppets and storyboards throughout the curriculum. (Must Attend Part 1 & 2)

The Importance of Play: Art, Blocks, and Outdoor Play

A child’s brain development is promoted through the many types of play. This workshop will focus on how to arrange the environment and plan for play as well as engage in some hands-on activities.

Creating Opportunities for Language Expression

During this workshop,participants will learn how they can plan and faciliate classroom routines or play activities, extend social interactions, or structure the environment to promote interactive language experiences for young children. Participants will also be taught how to build upon naturally occuring activities by incorporating reading and writing in meaningful ways, creating the opportunity for children to feel successful in liking their early language skills to literacy.

Being in the Moment

Being a responsive partner, caregivers can provide a variety of scaffolds to help children learn the basic rules of communication and conversations. This workshop aims at providing specific tools that will assist participants in adjusting the way they talk to children to encourage and extend conversations to enrich the language experience of children.

Child Abuse and Neglect: Indicators & Prevention

This workshop will provide an overview of the signs and symptoms of child abuse and neglect. Staff will learn how to communicate with children and families about sensitive topics and promote "safety" for children. Participants will also learn about the sexual development of children, how to respond to issues related to sexuality and when to be alerted to symptoms of suspected sexual abuse.

Beyond the Bell: Bridging Between the Classroom and School-Age Child Care

This hands-on workshop was designed to meet the unique needs of school-age care providers. Children between the ages of five and twelve spend a good part of the day engaged in highly structured educational activities. Activity ideas and classroom management strategies will be discussed to extend these experiences in a more child-directed and less structured fashion, while still maintaining control of the classroom. In addition, this workshop can be expanded towards activity and field trip ideas for surviving the summer months and school holidays.

Helping Children Manage Their Anger and Aggression

This workshop will focus on the aggressive behaviors children exhibit in the classroom, the possible reasons behind these behaviors, and safe ways children can express their feelings. Participants will explore their own histories concerning anger in order to understand how to better support children.

Building Self-Esteem in Young Children

Misbehavior in children is oftentimes attributed to feelings of worthlessness and anger based on low self-esteem. Strategies for enhancing self-esteem in children and staff will be addressed. Participants will learn about characteristics in children that show high and low self-esteem. Trainers will also spotlight interactions from caregivers that build self-esteem in children.

Health and Safety Practices for Young Children

Recent statistics indicate that three out of 10 children require medical help as a result of an accident. What makes these statistics so startling is that most of these injuries could have been prevented. By applying and maintaining health, safety and child-proofing measures, child care provides can make their sites secure and safe for th children in their care.

The Development of Communication Skills in Young Children

This workshop is aimed at increasing participants' awareness and understanding of how and why children communicate and the different stages of language development. With specific activities and discussions, participants will learn how to observe, wait and listen to what children are saying-doing in their classrooms and understand the influence of language on play and social interactions.

Child Assessment in Support of Learning

This workshop will examine the purpose of child assessment, ways to conduct child assessment and the use of assessment in planning program activities. The discussion will include the role of parents in the assessment process.

Science in the Early Childhood Classrooms

Rhymes, Rhythms and Fun

Rhyming songs, syllable clapping, and grouping objects according to how their names begin can all be used to draw children’s attention to the sounds of speech and to promote phonemic awareness. Recent research has confirmed that children who have a greater degree of phonological awareness when they enter school are better equipped to learn to read. This lively session is designed to increase caregivers repertoire of "language-play games".

From Scribbles to Name Writing

Often, the first word written by young children is their name. This module will help caregivers to understand the task of learning to write names as a developmental process that is both appropriate and fun for young children.

Positive Discipline

This workshop was developed to address a need for more workshops tailored to child care providers who work with school age children. This workshop is second in a four part series. By participating in this work shop the participant will deepen their understanding of Positive Discipline, guidelines for effective discipline, the use of "I" messages, the one minute reprimand, the one minute praise, and the use of logical consequences.

Making Books with Children

Creating Books is exciting and fun for children and is a great way to develop a lifelong love of books and reading. This workshop will get children interested in reading by helping them make their own books.

Director's Network: Creative Fundrasing for Child Care Centers

In today's world, child care programs cannot simply rely on tuition based fees to cover center costs and maintain a high level of quality services. Many sites have started to seek out fundraising opportunities that can be done on-site to assist in acquiring needed resources. In this workshop, participants will explore fundraising activities and ideas that can easily be implemented, including the use of donations, fundraising, marketing, unrealated business income, and governmental grants. Participants will learn helpful strategies and toold for grant writing activities. In addition, the will be provided with a list of resources to support fundraising and grant writing efforts.
