A Community Group for AAC Users, their Families, Friends, Therapists and Mentors

Out and About is an internationally recognized project started by Southwest Human Development’s assistive technology team. It is designed to support individuals who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems.

Out and About allows these individuals, family members, mentors, and support personnel (therapists, teachers, aides, habilitation workers) to come together as a group and practice using the device during community outings.

We welcome participants of any age and who use a variety of communication systems, access methods (direct selection to scanning via mouth switch to two switch scanning), and mobility (both ambulatory and wheelchair users).

Sample community outings have included: bowling, shopping, crafting, sporting events, touring local businesses, going to the park, and eating in restaurants.

We offer ten Out and About opportunities per year. Attendance is free for the AAC user and one guest. There may be a small cost for additional attendees and participation in the activity depending on the outing.

We have fun, enjoy each other's company and learn a lot!
