Healthy Families is part of a national initiative to help parents of newborns – especially those facing the greatest challenges – get their children off to a healthy start. Southwest Human Development operates the Healthy Families Program in Maricopa County.
Healthy Families works to strengthen families from pregnancy through the crucial first five years of their child’s life. Experience shows that supporting parents around the time of a baby’s birth can significantly reduce the risk factors associated with child abuse and neglect. Highly trained family support specialists visit families regularly in their own homes to provide guidance and assistance.

Program Eligibility
- Pregnant women or families with newborns under 90 days of age
- No income restrictions

First Things First (FTF) is approved by Arizona voters, and works to ensure that our youngest children have access to quality early childhood experiences so they will start school healthy and ready to succeed. Across the state, FTF regional partnership councils – in collaboration with local leaders – identify the education and health needs of children from birth through age five in their communities and fund strategies to address those needs.
Healthy Families Arizona became the first program in the nation to receive a four-year multi-site credential from Prevent Child Abuse America. This credential attests that Healthy Families Arizona meets nationally established research-based, best-practice standards for quality service delivery, management and operations.
