Assistive Technology (AT) helps people with disabilities achieve success and inclusion in family, school, and community activities. AT provides technological solutions and support to enable children with disabilities to communicate, play with toys, read, use the computer, achieve mobility, and interact successfully with others.
In some cases, simple low-tech adaptations or adaptive equipment can make all the difference in the world, like customizing a foam seating support for a toddler so that she can sit up and use her hands to play with toys. In other cases, sophisticated speech recognition software can be installed on a laptop and allow a child to speak for himself.
Our One Child, One Family, One Team approach ensures that the assistive technology team regularly collaborates with families and others to assure that each child assessment and plan is coordinated. The team focuses on understanding each child’s current abilities and connecting them with technology tools that give them access to their world.
Assistive technology can also be very effective in helping children on the autism spectrum communicate.
We conduct comprehensive evaluations and training for people of all ages in the following areas:
- Communication device selection
- Computer access
- Reading, writing, and learning
- Accessing items in the home, or at school
- Use of power wheel chairs
- Positioning and mounting related to accessing assistive technology tools
The Assistive Technology Training and Resource Center is well-respected locally and nationally, and is on the cutting-edge of this rapidly changing field. Our specialists are passionate about seeking innovative solutions for children.
If your child is age five or younger, they will have access to the Children's Developmental Center.
